Cellos and Chocolate
UCelli: The Columbus Cello Quartet has almost finished recording our first CD (we have another planned!), and we will be playing the featured works at Worthington's McConnell Center on this Sunday, January 13, at 3. Columbus's own Dr. Mark Lomax II wrote Four Women as part of his 400: An Afrikan Epic, a larger work being premeiered (in part) on January 26th. We have paired this jazzy, exciting piece with David Baker's Refractions, a three-movement work of very lush, colorful jazz-influenced music by one of the world's finest jazz musicians and educators. A bonus will be our opener, the traditional spiritual "Down to the River."
The McConnell is a comfortable venue with good sound -- and art on display as well! I hope you will come support UCelli and hear some inspiring cello tunes. I will be brewing up some really good hot chocolate as we play, for afters.
UCelli Performs "Four Women" by Mark Lomax II
Admission is free and open to the public Presented in conjunction with I, Too, Sing America: The Harlem Renaissance at 100 UCelli, the Columbus Cello Quartet joins us for a performance of Four Women by composer Dr. Mark Lomax. The piece is part of Lomax's 400: An Afrikan Epic, a 12-album cycle telling the story of Black America over the 400 years between the start of the transatlantic slave trade and the present day. UCelli will also perform a piece by David Baker, the first African American to serve on the board of the National Endowment of the Arts. It's a sure-to-be powerful and memorable evening of music in our galleries. Photo courtesy of UCelli.
This event was sponsored in part by the Johnstone Fund.
UCelli / Live in Concert
UCelli is a quartet of virtuoso cellists who also perform with the Columbus Symphony and ProMusica Chamber Orchestras. They will be performing Four Women by Dr. Mark Lomax, based on Lomax's 400: An Afrikan Epic, an ambitious story of Black America. They will also be performing a wonderful, jazzy piece by David Baker, the first African-American to serve on the board of the National Endowment for the Arts.
